Drawing In Time

Class: Perception and Translation, Foundations / 2020 to ongoing

Students chose an everyday location (indoor or outdoor), and observed and journaled about it over a period of time. They then were asked to make 3 black and white drawings, materially open, that depicted the space over a period of time, or a series of 3 perspectives. Students first completed this assignment during the height of the pandemic in 2020, and were able to chose locations that allowed them to isolate if necessary or desired. Students chose their kitchen sink, parks, campus, their workplaces, their desks, closets and dorm rooms, backyards and kitchens. Students utilized traditional materials such as graphite and acrylic, but also made digital drawings and used experimental materials. Although some drawings are more abstracted than others, all were rooted in observation. Value and composition are emphasized.
